From what I've read and been seeing there is plenty of depth on the line for the Indianapolis Colts.
Obviously Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are back to back Pro Bowl selections and will be starters on the end. Jerry Hughes is also looking very good as a pass rush option. With Mathis' contract coming to an end, and Freeney getting older, it is reassuring to know that Hughes can be a viable option in the future.
At Defensive Tackle there are plenty of options. However none are very proven.
Antonio Johnson
Johnson was once a starter on the D-line. I'm not sure if he will be now, especially with the addition of Tommie Harris. But Johnson was resigned, which is more than we can say about Daniel Muir. The resigning indicates that the Colts believed in him, and they brought him back before knowing about Harris, so I'm assuming Johnson was brought back to play.
Tommie Harris
Harris was signed by the Colts. Harris, a former monster in the middle of that incredible Chicago Bears defense, is a great tackle option. Harris was hampered by knee injuries, however he admitted that his recent lack of playing time in Chicago was ultimately due to a scheme change, not injuries. He looked like he had a great burst off the line since joining the Colts in camp. Harris is by far the most talented option we have at DT, it will all boil down to how his knee holds up.
Moala moved his way into the starting rotation last year. Polian, and the Colts staff thought Moala progressed very much between year one and year two. Therefore his jump from two to three is most likely going to be good enough to get Moala significant playing time. I expect Moala to maintain his starting job.
Ricardo Mathews
Mathews, reportedly, is playing very well. Reports have it that he has lined up next to Freeney with the first team defense. Mathews was a rookie last year, and got pushed around, I remember specifically against the Jets. However Mathews may have the year one to two jump Moala did, and may work his way into a significant rotation.
Eric Foster
One of my favorite Colts players. A little under-sized, but he was brought back by the Colts. Foster seems to be a great locker room type guy to boost the morale. He is also a great "situational" player coming in on passing downs and making plays there.
Drake Nevis
The rookie has looked very impressive. I've heard from some experts that he looks to be the best draft choice in this year's class thus far. Nevis a little short, but has a great burst, and a huge upper body.
There are tons of options at Defensive Tackle. All unknowns aside from Harris, however all with great potential. The upside is massive, and it is something to be excited about. The Colts typically run a defensive line rotation with situation substitutes. There are plenty of options at defensive tackle, all sandwiched between two perennial Pro Bowlers.
This may be the year that we finally get past the "Bad Luck at Defensive Tackle."
